How to choose an Etsy shop name
Your shop name is the first thing a buyer reads, the word they type to find you again, and the end of your URL: etsy.com/shop/YourName. It is worth an hour of thought, but not a week. A good name is easy to say, easy to spell and tells people roughly what you make. Everything else is polish.
Start with three lists:
- What you sell. Candles, linen, prints, rings. One or two of these words, or a word that evokes them, makes a name instantly clear.
- How it should feel. Cozy and handmade, clean and modern, premium, playful. The feel decides the words around your keyword: LittleCandleNook and CandleAtelier sell the same thing to different people.
- Words you already own. Your name, your initials, your street, a place you love. They are hard for anyone else to claim and easy for you to stand behind.
The generator above does this from one sentence: describe what you sell and how it should feel, and it drafts names, checks each one against open Etsy shops and sorts them for you. Save the ones that make you nod, then read the rest of this guide before you commit.
Etsy's shop name rules
Etsy's How to Open an Etsy Shop lists five requirements. A shop name must be:
- 4 to 20 characters long.
- Letters and numbers only. No spaces, no special characters. That rules out hyphens, apostrophes, ampersands and accented letters.
- Free of profanity.
- Not already in use by an existing Etsy member.
- Not infringing on someone else's trademark.
Three details follow from those rules and trip people up:
- Capitalization is display only. Etsy suggests capitalizing each word so HouseOfBalticLinen is readable, and changing capitalization later does not count as a name change. It also means mugco and MugCo are the same name.
- Usernames count. Once a word has been used as a shop name or a username it cannot be used again, even if that account is closed.
- Your shop name is not your username. You sign in with your username and it never changes; the shop name can.
The generator only keeps names that pass the first two rules, and its availability check covers the fourth for open shops.
Branding tips, with examples
Say it out loud
If you have to spell it, it is too clever. WildFernStudio survives a phone call; Wyldefyrn does not. Avoid doubled letters at word joins (BookKeep) and numbers that stand in for words (Candles4U).
Leave room to grow
AnnasMugs is perfect until Anna starts making bowls. A material, place or feeling ages better than a single product: ClayAndEmber, NorthLoftGoods, SlowThreadStudio.
Use rhythm
Alliteration and two-beat names are easy to remember: PoppyPatch, CedarAndClay, MossMade. Three words is the practical ceiling at 20 characters.
Endings carry meaning
- Studio, Atelier, Works: you design and make things.
- Co, Goods, Supply: a curated range, often several product types.
- House, Maison, Collective: a brand with a point of view, sometimes more than one maker.
- Nook, Corner, Cottage: small, personal, handmade.
Coined words
Candlery, Printify, Linenly: an invented word is usually free on Etsy, as a .com and as a handle. The cost is that it tells a new buyer nothing, so pair it with a clear shop title and photos.
Does your shop name affect Etsy search?
Not much, and less than most guides claim. Etsy's own list of what affects search placement, in its shop opening guide, is tag and title relevancy, item attribute relevancy, listing quality, customer and market experience, and free shipping. The shop name is not on it. Listings rank; shops are found through them.
The one Etsy statement in favor is soft. Its Seller Handbook article on shop names says that putting the words buyers search for into your shop name "might help" your shop appear in those searches on Etsy and the web. For Google, Etsy's SEO guide points to the shop title (the 55-character line under your name), not the name itself.
So: a keyword in your name helps a buyer understand you, and may help a little on Google. It will not lift your listings in Etsy search. Choose the name for people and do the SEO in your titles, tags and shop title.
Mistakes to avoid
- Copying a known shop with one letter changed. Buyers land on the wrong shop, and you invite a trademark complaint.
- Trend words. Boho, Aesthetic and Vibes date fast and are already in thousands of names.
- Generic words alone. HandmadeGifts or CustomDecor is impossible to remember and almost certainly taken.
- Hard-to-type strings. Dropped vowels, doubled letters, numbers for letters, and names that need a hyphen you are not allowed to use.
- Promising what you will stop making. If you might move from mugs to bowls, do not put Mugs in the name.
- Skipping the other checks. A name free on Etsy but owned on Instagram or as a .com will cost you later. See the availability checker for the full list.
Trademarks
"Does not infringe on another's trademark" is one of Etsy's five requirements, and it is the one Etsy cannot check for you at signup. Before you commit:
- Search the USPTO trademark database (or your country's registry) for the name and close variants, in your product category.
- Search Google and Etsy for the name. A well-known unregistered brand can still object.
- Avoid brand names, characters and franchises entirely, including in combinations.
If you hold the rights to a name and someone else has it on Etsy, Etsy's shop name article suggests contacting the member first. You can file an intellectual property notice, but Etsy says that will not free the name for your use.
How to change your Etsy shop name later
You are not locked in. Per Etsy's How to Change Your Shop Name:
- On Etsy.com, open Shop Manager, then Settings, then Your shop.
- Next to Shop name, select Change.
- Enter the new name and save.
What to expect:
- Before your shop opens you can change the name as often as you like. After it opens, you get up to 5 changes in settings; after that, a change needs approval from Etsy Support.
- Changing capitalization, or going back to a name you used before, does not count toward the 5.
- Your URL changes to the new name and the old URL redirects.
- Nobody else can take your previous name.
- A "name changed" icon shows next to your shop name on your shop page, profile and in shop search for 45 days.
Shop names cannot be changed from the Etsy Seller app, and a name you used on another account stays unavailable even after that account closes; Etsy suggests reopening that shop instead.
