Etsy listings can now have 3 variations, up from 2

Sellers of physical items can add a third variation type; Etsy flagged it on July 30, 2026 and described it as live by September 22, 2026.

Etsy listings can now have variations for up to 3 item attributes, up from 2. Etsy's Help Center says: "You can add variations for up to 3 item attributes while creating or editing a listing."

Etsy staff flagged the change on July 30, 2026: "Soon we're launching a third variation field, giving you three separate fields to offer product variations." On September 22, 2026, Etsy's Newly Crafted post told sellers they can "use up to three variations". Etsy hasn't published an exact launch date.

Who it affects

Sellers of physical items. "Listing variations are not currently supported for digital item listings," Etsy says.

The limits that come with it

Etsy caps the number of option combinations, and the cap is lower with 3 types. Per the Help Center:

  • 3 variation types: up to 2,500 option combinations.
  • 1 or 2 variation types: up to 4,900.
  • Unique or country-specific prices, SKUs and quantities: up to 400 combinations.

A combination is one version of your item. Etsy's own example, 10 sizes, 25 colors and 10 materials, makes 10 × 25 × 10 = 2,500 combinations, exactly at the cap.

Here is how the 400 limit works in practice. A print sold in 8 sizes, 10 colors and 6 frame materials has 8 × 10 × 6 = 480 combinations. That fits under 2,500, but it's above 400, so you can't set a unique price for every combination. With 5 frame materials it drops to 8 × 10 × 5 = 400, which fits.

Adding a third type also lowers your ceiling. A listing that uses close to 4,900 combinations with 2 types has no room for a third, because the cap falls to 2,500.

What to do

  • Split combined options. Etsy's advice: "Separate choices like size, color, and style into distinct variations instead of combining them."
  • Pick from Etsy's default variation list where you can. Etsy says buyers "won't be able to filter their Etsy search results based on custom variations."
  • Keep variations and personalization apart. Etsy says to use variations "when buyers are choosing from a set list of options that impact price, inventory, or SKU (like size, color, or material)" and personalization "when buyers are adding custom details". Staff gave "an engraved name" as an example of a custom options request.

What we don't know yet

Etsy hasn't given the day the third variation went live. The same Help article still says "You can add up to ten photos" in its steps for variation photos, while Etsy's listing guide says you can add up to 20.
