How AnnapolisMonogram rewrote its titles for machine embroiderers

AnnapolisMonogram
AnnapolisMonogram has sold hand-digitized machine embroidery designs on Etsy since 2021, and the shop has passed 52,000 sales. It runs on data, not hunches: older titles are being rewritten in Alura's listing editor so each one answers what an embroiderer checks first, and on the close calls the rewrite is tested against the old title before either is kept.
Mini motifs with a nautical streak
Annapolis Monograms doesn't ship anything you can hold. It sells the files that tell an embroidery machine where to put every stitch. Each design is hand-digitized for a clean stitch-out with minimal jumps and trims, the extra thread moves and cuts that make a design slow and fiddly to sew.
The catalog is full of small things: a one-inch lab puppy, a striped sailboat, a lobster, a hydrangea, bow monogram frames, and script fonts with names like Breezie and Heritage. There's a nautical streak that suits the shop's name, with anchors, crabs, school-of-fish motifs and Blue Angels jets. The shop asks buyers to tag finished pieces on Instagram, and it takes custom digitizing work by message.
Victoria, who owns the shop and designs for it, spent 11 years selling on Amazon for some of the largest consumer product brands, where sophisticated data analysis tools were part of the job. When she took the embroidery business full time, she wanted the same kind of tools for Etsy. Alura is where she gets them, so decisions about titles, keywords and tests rest on what buyers actually do.
Titles built in pieces, separated by bars
Many older listings had titles built from pieces separated by bars. The mini hydrangea read: "Mini hydrangea embroidery design | 1" 1.5" 2" | spring floral | easter mother's day | machine embroidery digital file." Every piece was true. Occasions took up the middle, and the end restated that this was a machine embroidery file.
What those titles left for later is what the shop now puts first: whether the file will work on the buyer's machine. That comes down to the file format, like PES for some machines or DST and JEF for others, and whether the design fits the hoop they own. In the old listings, the formats sat further down the description, below a note in capital letters explaining that this is a digital product.
“Their first question is whether the file opens on their machine and fits their hoop. If the title doesn't answer that, they've already scrolled past it. Alura's data also tells me how often customers are typing in those format or machine specific terms, so I know that they are worth putting in front of the customer earlier.”
Rewriting one design at a time
Victoria works through the catalog in Alura's listing editor. Each listing gets a Listing score from 0 to 100, with separate grades for photos, title, description and tags, so the weak spots are easy to see. Most of the new titles were typed straight into the editor, in roughly the same order: what the design is, then the sizes, then the formats or the hoop it fits.
AI does some of the work. On a few listings Victoria accepted an AI title as written, as with the stork design, which became "New Baby Embroidery Design File | Stork Motif, Four Sizes for Machine Embroidery." Tags got a similar pass. The laurel leaf frame traded general ones like "spring frame" and "classic frame" for terms such as "leaf applique" and "monogram applique." Some descriptions changed too. The laurel frame's description used to reach the capital-letter note about digital products by its third line. Now it opens by describing the frame and its hoop sizes, and the practical notes follow. Nothing changes on Etsy until Victoria clicks Publish changes, and Listing history keeps the earlier version if a rewrite needs to go back.
Letting a test settle the close calls
Sometimes the old title and the new one both look right. For those listings the shop runs an A/B test. Variant A is the current title and Variant B is the rewrite. Alura switches the live Etsy listing between the two on a schedule, every eight hours by default, and compares sales and revenue for each version.
The results don't always favor the rewrite. On the Chase block font, the shorter new title came out ahead and stayed, even though it dropped the sizes. The stork test went the other way, and the listing kept the title it already had. That Chase result cuts against the shop's own habit of putting sizes up front, and the shop kept it anyway. On a close call, the test decides, not the rule. Each test changes one thing, usually the title, so the comparison means something.

“The Etsy algorithm changes without notice, so testing various titles is vital to increasing my conversion rates. Sometimes my gut is correct, and other times the data proves otherwise!”
Formats and hoop sizes, up front
The rewritten titles are shorter and more specific. The spider set now says it fits a 4x4 hoop, so a buyer with a small machine knows straight away. The bow monogram frame names its five sizes and its PES and BX files. The school subjects set dropped the capitals and the "Back to School" line, and says which hoops it fits.
Occasion words don't need a place in the title. Tags and descriptions can still carry "easter" or "halloween" without crowding it. Some fonts also keep their names, like Breezie and Heritage, so a returning buyer can find the one they liked.

Write for the person at the machine
For anyone selling digital files, the shop's advice is to think about the moment after purchase. The buyer is standing at the machine with a hoop in hand. Give them the sizes, the formats and the hoop fit before they click, and leave the occasions and the mood to the photos. And when two titles both seem right, change one listing at a time so you know what made the difference.
“Outside of high volume description words, the customer wants to know if it has the format they need, in the size they need or enough sizes to use multiple ways in the future. All the rest can live in the product images, tags and description.”
