TrixieRoxDesigns has made nearly 38,000 sales of handmade dog collars, harnesses and leashes since opening on Etsy in 2013. New prints went up from a template with shared tags and a shared description opening. The shop now uses Alura's AI to write both for each print, and Pinterest automation to pin new ones.

A 15th year of collars made to order

Meaghan makes every TrixieRoxDesigns piece to order in her Illinois studio, with no outsourcing and no production partners. The shop is starting its 15th year of custom pet gear: dog collars, harnesses, leashes, ID tags, toys and even kitty gear. A collar is washable cotton fabric over a heavy-duty webbing core, with a side release buckle and a choice of hardware colors. Add-ons turn it into a martingale, swap in a metal buckle or embroider a dog's name and phone number.

The prints are the fun part. Hot dogs, corn dogs, noodles and sprinkles, Halloween ghosts, plaids, florals and a pool of rippling blue water. Every collar ships at its smallest adjustable size to keep the package compact, and the shop has a 4.97 star average across more than 10,000 reviews.

One template for a very big catalog

With more than 2,000 active listings, the shop needs a fast way to list a new print. The answer was a template. Each new collar got its print name in the title, a shared description that opened with "Stylish, Durable & One-of-a-Kind", and a near-identical set of 13 tags, from "unique dog collar" and "designer dog collar" to "martingale collar" and the shop's own name.

The template did its job: new prints went up quickly. It also meant a green plaid collar and a rainbow collar carried nearly the same tags, and neither set said plaid or rainbow, the word a shopper would most likely type.

“When you're adding new prints all the time, a template is the only way anything gets listed. The trouble is the tags never said what was on the collar.”

AI writes the tags for the print in front of it

TrixieRoxDesigns uses Alura's listing optimizer to replace that template one listing at a time. In the editor, Start optimization runs AI on whatever is ticked in the optimization settings. For this shop that's mostly the tags, the description and the photo alt text, the short image descriptions that screen readers and search engines read. Titles change less often; most newer listings already lead with the print name.

The AI works from what's already in the listing and writes tags for that collar. A green plaid gets "plaid dog collar", "green dog collar" and "dog collar with ring". A brown and green plaid gets "brown dog collar", "checked dog collar" and "earth tone collar". Construction tags come in alongside them, like "cotton dog collar", "side release collar" and "webbing dog collar", true of every collar in the shop.

New descriptions open with the collar itself. The green plaid now starts: "This plaid dog collar features a green-and-white check pattern and a stainless steel D ring for attaching a leash." The cotton over webbing, the adjustable fit and the hardware colors follow. Nothing goes to Etsy until the changes are published, and the listing history keeps each earlier version.

“The collars and the photos are mine. The tags can come from AI. After a day of sewing, "earth tone collar" is not a phrase I'd think of on my own.”

New prints reach Pinterest without a separate job

The same listings feed Pinterest. Pin New Listings is a daily job that picks up listings that went live in the past day, so a new Halloween ghost collar gets a pin without anyone opening Pinterest. Smart Pins fills the rest of the queue from the shop's active listings, ranked mostly by Etsy listing views, and the pins go to the shop's Handmade Pet Products board.

Pin text is set to "Optimized for Pinterest with AI". Recent pins read "Colorful Poolside Water Dog Collar, Adjustable & Washable" and "Neon Orange & Lilac Checkered Handmade Dog Collar", with descriptions that mention the washable cotton and the webbing core. Like the new tags, each pin title names the print first.

Every print now has tags that name it

Below are the tags on three collars, five from each side. The befores come from the shop-wide set. The afters drop most of the shared set and add the print, the colors and the construction, so each collar is described by what makes it different from the one next to it.

The rainbow waves collar shows where the work went. Its title is the same as before. The change is in the tags and in the first lines of the description, the two places where the template used to repeat itself from listing to listing.

Template the parts that never change

A big handmade catalog runs on templates, and the parts that are true of every collar belong in one: the cotton, the webbing core, the size chart, the shipping note. The part that changes from listing to listing is the print, and that's usually what a shopper came looking for. Make sure it reaches the title, the tags and the first line of the description.

“Shoppers come looking for a print. A plaid one, a ghost one, one with hot dogs on it. Name the print everywhere you can.”
