How The Magic Happens got started

Introduce your Etsy shop and tell us your story. How did you begin and decide on what to sell on Etsy, and how do you create your products?

My sister and I started The Magic Happens in 2013 as a local online shop based in Jakarta-Indonesia that sold custom prints and handmade personalized favors.

In late 2016, I got married and moved to a little island in west Indonesia called Bintan, far away from the Jakarta hustle bustle, where shipping things was difficult. 

Therefore, we started to look for a digital option for our shop that could keep us being productive, and that's how we started our Etsy shop. At first, we started to sell digital products like hand drawn clip arts, digital papers and other printable items.

Along the way, we started to make digital planner stuff as we found digital planning super fun!

Favorite items

What are your favorite items? What makes these so special? Why do you think these items might be selling well?

We have a lot of fun making digital planner stuff, where function meets aesthetic. First, I made a digital planner for myself, and then I thought that maybe this would help people to organize their life and achieve their success -  this is my favorite part! 

And fortunately, we'd say that our digital planner products are selling pretty well actually. Digital planning is now trending as people start to shift from paper planner to a digital one.

Getting sales on Etsy

How long did it take for you to earn your first sale and how do you currently attract customers to your Etsy shop?  

It took about a week for us to get our first sale on Etsy. Currently, we attract customers from Etsy SEO, ads and Instagram.

Managing The Magic Happens

How do you manage your shop? Are you running solo or do you have any team members? What tools or services do you use to run your shop and how do you handle fulfillment?

Currently, I'm running this Etsy shop with my sister as a business partner. We both create products - my sister does the clip arts, digital papers, wallpapers stuff, and I mostly do the digital planner stuff and customer service.

What goals do you have for your shop in the future?

We hope that in the future we can create more categories and products, since there are still lots of ideas to explore.

Advice for new sellers

What’s your advice for a new seller starting an Etsy shop?

Persistence! If you are starting an Etsy shop, be determined and stay focused to keep delivering high quality products. 

You won't instantly get big sales. But along the way, if you stay persistent and consistent in producing great products and deliver excellent customer service, I'm sure that your efforts will bring out awesome results!
