How LandOfMacrame got started
Introduce your Etsy shop and tell us your story. How did you begin and decide on what to sell on Etsy, and how do you create your products?
I learned macramé, knitting, and crocheting when I was young. My grandmother taught me the basics. Later, it became one of my favorite hobbies. I was making items for friends and family. I started selling handmade items on Etsy together with my friend in 2014. I really enjoyed making handmade items, especially using the macramé technique. So I worked to learn new knots and new patterns, and I started my own Etsy shop in 2017. Besides making items for sale, I decided to share my knowledge, and I am also making tutorials for my macramé products.
Favorite items
What are your favorite items? What makes these so special? Why do you think these items might be selling well?
My favorite items in my shop are not always the bestsellers. I like natural materials, like jute cord, and freeform lines in my patterns. Sometimes they don’t sell well, and sometimes it can take a long time before they are sold. Sometimes they sell well for a while, and then sales just stop. I think that buyers who view these wall hangings just don’t like jute cord as much as I do.

Getting sales on Etsy
How long did it take for you to earn your first sale and how do you currently attract customers to your Etsy shop?
I had my first sale one month after opening my Etsy shop. At first, I had only a few sales per month. It is important to add new products continuously. There is no rule for which item will attract customers, and if there is a wide range of products, some of them will sell well and some of them won’t. However, if there are a lot of different items in an Etsy shop, the chance to get some sales is bigger.
Managing LandOfMacrame
How do you manage your shop? Are you running solo or do you have any team members? What tools or services do you use to run your shop and how do you handle fulfillment?
I manage my shop by myself. I don’t have a big production, so I can find time to work in my Etsy shop. My son is helping me with shipping and buying supplies, but I am doing everything else. I am using Etsy rank for listing analysis and tags.
The future of LandOfMacrame
What goals do you have for your shop in the future?
I am trying to "free my creativity" and to enjoy designing more. Lately, I started to think about what designs can be sold and which won’t attract buyers’ attention. This way of thinking limits creativity's potential. I want to think more about designing and enjoying the process of creation, and I believe that such a product will be found by someone who will like it.
Advice for new sellers
What’s your advice for a new seller starting an Etsy shop?
There is a lot of advice regarding SEO, a good listing description, and having good listing photos. This advice is good. I would add that it is important to have a large range of different items. It is a way to explore the demand for certain products. Also, sellers should listen to their customers' needs. For example, I really like to do custom orders and make something unique for my buyers. In this way, we are creating together. I had a situation where one of my customers sent me photos of their carpet and asked for a wall hanging with the same colors. The result was this wall hanging:
