How Fiddlesticks Education got started
Introduce your Etsy shop and tell us your story. How did you begin and decide on what to sell on Etsy, and how do you create your products?
My name is Becca and I’m the owner & artist of Fiddlesticks Education, a shop specialising in providing hand painted digital learning resources for children. I started creating educational resources for my own daughter.
In 2017, I had previously owned an Etsy shop selling coloring pages and decided to rebrand and change the direction of my shop.
I take inspiration from the natural world as well as specific areas of learning that spark curiosity in our own home education journey.
What are your favorite items? What makes these so special? Why do you think these items might be selling well?
That’s a hard one, I feel like I put so much of myself into each product that each new one I create becomes my favorite.
I think my Living Shore : Rock Pool Collection is probably my favorite as it was so fun to research and create.
I also really enjoyed creating the Paleo-Adventures Set as it's a full exploration play based learning set.
Both of these have sold well for me, and I think many of my customers look for the same kind of things as I do : interactive and open-ended resources. I feel that knowing your customer base helps really well when planning and creating new products.
Getting sales on Etsy
How long did it take for you to earn your first sale and how do you currently attract customers to your Etsy shop?
When I rebranded and re-launched my shop, I spent a few weeks prior to that posting sneak peaks onto my Instagram account and building up a small following.
On launch day, I made my first sale and was so excited. I’d say it took around a year for me to make sales consistently and for my shop to be turning a profit. The success of my shop has built year on year, but each sale is still just as exciting as the first.
I attract customers mainly through Instagram, providing learning suggestions featuring my resources and general educational tips. I’m also trying to curate a more efficient mailing list to provide my customers with news/updates and valuable content.
Managing Fiddlesticks Education
How do you manage your shop? Are you running solo or do you have any team members? What tools or services do you use to run your shop and how do you handle fulfillment?
I’m the sole operator behind my shop, however in the last few months I have hired a couple of my dedicated customers to work as social media managers on Facebook and Pinterest, as I simply didn’t have the time to nurture these platforms myself.
I run a website separate to my Etsy shop on Weebly, where I provide freebies for my customers as well as dedicated content for them.
All my products are digital, so orders are immediately fulfilled, automatically by Etsy.
The future of Fiddlesticks Education
What goals do you have for your shop in the future?
I’m hoping to expand my product range, to cater to some of the requests of my customer base. I’d love to see my shop continue to grow in the future and be able to help more families around the world.
Advice for new sellers
What’s your advice for a new seller starting an Etsy shop?
Keep going and don’t get downhearted, it's a long and slow process to build up a successful shop and customer following.
It can take years, but if you are dedicated and keep true to yourself you will succeed. Customers can tell if you are truly passionate about what you create and that will get them hooked.
