SignatureTShirtz has made more than 41,000 sales of graphic tees and sweatshirts on Etsy since 2020, from a catalog of over 1,500 listings. Rather than guess which designs to pin, it lets Alura's Smart Pins choose from the listings shoppers are already viewing on Etsy and write the pins for Pinterest.

A shirt for the hiker, the teacher and the grandma

SignatureTShirtz makes shirts for the things people care about. "Take a hike" for the hiker, "Allegedly" for the law student, a gingham apple tee with a teacher's name on it for the first day of school. There are souvenir sweatshirts for Salem, Portugal and Hawaii, varsity number crewnecks for sports parents, and grandma sweatshirts with the grandkids' names down the sleeve. Many designs come as a Comfort Colors or Bella+Canvas tee and as a Gildan crewneck, each with its own listing.

The shop has more than 41,000 sales and over 9,000 reviews, with a 4.9 star average. Buyers who don't see the size, color or design they want can ask, and the shop will make it. Every order ends with a thank-you from Sheila and Sam and an invitation to post a photo wearing the shirt and tag @signaturetshirtz on Instagram.

Fifteen hundred listings and no way to guess

Pinterest suits a shop like this. People go there to plan a girls' trip, a family photo, a teacher gift or a Halloween weekend, and they save ideas well before they buy. A pin of a Salem sweatshirt can reach someone who hasn't thought to search Etsy for one yet.

The hard part is choosing. With more than 1,500 active listings, any manual pinning routine reaches a small slice of the catalog, and it reaches the slice someone happened to pick. The designs a shop owner is proudest of aren't always the ones shoppers are looking at this month. A guess made in spring can be wrong by autumn, and rechecking it every week is one more job on top of the orders.

“With this many designs, my favorites and the ones people are actually looking at aren't always the same. I'd rather go with what shoppers are already looking at.”

Etsy views decide what gets pinned

SignatureTShirtz connected its Pinterest account to Alura and turned on both automations. Smart Pins fills the queue once a day with pins made from the shop's active listings, about ten days ahead. It ranks those listings mostly by their Etsy listing views. So the designs shoppers are looking at on Etsy are the ones most likely to go to Pinterest, and the choice moves as their interest moves.

Smart Pins also keeps the feed from repeating itself. A photo pinned in the last seven days is never reused, and photos from the past month come back only when nothing fresher is left. Because many designs have a tee listing and a sweatshirt listing, each with its own photos, a popular design can show up on Pinterest in both forms.

Pin New Listings runs alongside it. Once a day it picks up any listing that went live in the past day, so a new design gets a pin without waiting to build up views. Everything posts to one board, on the posting days, time slots and timezone set in the Pin Queue, and any pin can be edited, reordered or deleted before it goes out.

Pin text written from each listing

Both automations use "Optimized for Pinterest with AI" for the pin text. The AI reads the listing and writes a short headline and a description for someone scrolling Pinterest, not someone typing into Etsy search. Most descriptions end with "See details on Etsy."

Because it works from the listing in front of it, the pin keeps the details right. A pin for the Salem tee talks about soft Comfort Colors cotton. One pin for the Pajamas All Day sweatshirt mentions Gildan fleece, and another suggests it for lazy weekends and movie marathons. The same design pinned again later gets a newly written description rather than a copy of the last pin.

“An Etsy title is written for Etsy search. On Pinterest people are scrolling for ideas, so the pin needs to read like an idea, not a list of keywords.”

Long Etsy titles in, Pinterest headlines out

These are recent pins from the shop's board, set against the Etsy listings they came from. The designs are the ones Smart Pins has been choosing: a Salem tee for Halloween trips, a spreadsheet joke for accountants, a minimalist cycling tee and a sweatshirt for new grandmas.

Each Etsy title is built for Etsy search, with the design name up front and the gift and occasion phrases after it. Each pin title says what the shirt is and who it's for, in words a person scrolling Pinterest would use. The grandma pin drops the list of holidays from the Etsy title and keeps the one idea that works on any of them: a gift for a proud grandma.

List the tee and the sweatshirt separately

SignatureTShirtz's tip for other apparel sellers has nothing to do with Pinterest. Give a design its own tee listing and its own sweatshirt listing, with photos and a title for each. A tee and a crewneck sell to different people in different months, and each listing can speak to its own buyer, from the fabric to the season. The photos can follow the season too: the Hawaii tee on a beach, the Salem crewneck next to a pile of pumpkins.

“We list a lot of designs twice, as a tee and as a sweatshirt. Someone shopping in October wants the crewneck, and they shouldn't have to dig through tee photos to find it.”
