How BashfulYak rewrote its hobby tee listings around the artwork

BashfulYak has made more than 1,900 sales on Etsy since opening in 2025, with a tee for nearly every hobby, from ham radio callsigns to paper marbling clubs. With close to 2,000 listings to look after, the shop uses Alura's listing editor to rewrite titles and descriptions around what each shirt actually shows.

A shirt for nearly every hobby

Bashful Yak Apparel Co. makes graphic tees for people with very particular passions. There is a shirt for blacksmiths, one for plastic modelers who build tanks, one for N scale railroaders, one for unicyclists who ride mountain trails. Many are personalized, so a ham radio operator gets their own callsign on the chest and a family reunion gets its surname over an olive harvest or a sandcastle. A running series called Things I Do In My Spare Time turns a hobby into a little grid of scenes, whether that is crochet, bonsai, stargazing or boating.

The shirts themselves are name brands, Bella Canvas and Comfort Colors, printed with DTG by professional print partners in the USA rather than ironed on at home. If a buyer lives outside the US, the order goes to a print shop close to them. The shop opened in 2025 and has passed 1,900 sales with a 4.9 star average across 370 reviews.

Two thousand listings, each for a different hobby

A catalog like this lives or dies on its words. A shopper looking for a model railroad shirt types model railroad. Someone shopping for a blacksmith in the family types blacksmith. The listing has to answer with the hobby first and then show that the drawing is the real thing: a steam locomotive, a tank kit, a forge.

Many of the shop's earlier titles were built to cover a lot of ground at once. They stacked the theme, a slogan and a run of general phrases like Casual Wear, Vibrant Colors and Comfortable Fit, sometimes in parentheses at the end. The descriptions often opened with a line about celebrating your passion before getting to the art. Those phrases could sit on almost any shirt in the shop, from the possum tee to the bonsai tee. Multiply that by close to 2,000 listings and the rewriting adds up fast.

“Somebody who loves blacksmithing types blacksmith. They don't type casual wear. So the title should lead with the hobby and then say what's on the shirt.”

The AI writes the first draft, the shop has the last word

BashfulYak does this work in Alura's listing editor, one listing at a time. Each listing opens with a Listing score from 0 to 100 and separate grades for photos, title, description and tags, which makes it easy to see which part needs attention.

From there, the shop ticks title, description and tags in Optimization settings and clicks Start optimization. The AI returns a new title, a new description and a fresh set of tags. Nothing changes on Etsy yet. The suggestions sit in the editor, and View changes shows exactly what the AI would change.

That review step is where the shop's own judgment comes in. Most rewrites start from the AI draft, and some get a hand edit before or after they go live. A first draft is a starting point, and the shop knows each design better than any draft does.

When a listing reads right, Publish changes sends it to Etsy. If a rewrite turns out worse than the original, Listing history keeps the older versions and Restore version brings one back.

“The AI gets the first pass. I still read it before it goes out, because I know what's on the shirt and sometimes it doesn't.”

Titles that lead with the hobby and name the art

The rewritten titles are shorter. The hobby or theme comes first, the artwork is named plainly, and phrases like Casual Wear and Comfortable Fit are gone. The blacksmith tee now reads Blacksmith Hobby Tee, Vintage Anvil and Forge Scenes, Metalworking Graphic T-Shirt, so a blacksmith can check the title against the design at a glance.

The descriptions changed the same way. The blacksmith tee used to open with a line about embracing your true passion. It now opens with what is on the shirt: three vintage-inspired metalworking scenes, an anvil with glowing metal, gloved hands hammering iron and a roaring forge. A shopper can picture the design before scrolling back up to the photo. The VHS collector shirt now leads with its vintage VCR, stacked tapes and retro sunset, and the plastic modeler shirt with its tank, modeling tools and Glue Everything slogan. Each description is about that one shirt and no other.

Describe the design, not the feeling

For other sellers with big catalogs of designs, BashfulYak's advice is to write about the artwork. Shoppers in a niche know their hobby well and look for the details that prove the shirt was made by someone who gets it. Name the locomotive, the anvil, the floppy disk. And if a rewrite comes back wrong, fix it before it goes live, because you know your own designs best.

“Hobby people know their stuff. If it's a steam locomotive, call it a steam locomotive. They'll notice if you don't.”
