How to Cancel an Order on Etsy As a Seller

No matter how good your Etsy shop is, there’s always a chance that a buyer requests their order be canceled. As outstanding customer service is essential for shop growth, you need to be lightning-fast with order cancellation on Etsy.

Keep reading to discover how you can quickly cancel and order on Etsy. Let’s take a look at who can cancel an order first. We’ll then go through the process step-by-step.

Who Can Cancel an Order on Etsy?

Like in any eCommerce transaction, there are two sides to the process. A buyer and a seller. On Etsy, the only person who can cancel an order is the seller.

The buyer can only request order cancelation. However, the seller is the one who cancels the order. If that’s the case, the buyer should contact the seller

Simply state that you want to cancel the order and wait for the seller’s reply. They’ll quickly get back to you as the owner receives notifications about new messages.

How to Cancel an Order on Etsy As a Seller?

Canceling an order on Etsy is a simple process. No matter if you’re on desktop or mobile, it’s quick. Here’s how you can do it.

1. When you log in to your shop, head over to the Shop Manager.

2. Now click Orders & Shipping.

3. Go to the Cancel an Order page. If you’re on a desktop, all you have to do is find the three-dot icon on the order you want to cancel. Click Cancel.

On the other hand, if you’re on mobile, explore the Order Detail page. Find More actions and tap on the button. Tap on Cancel.

4. You will not see a dropdown where you can select your cancellation reason. Choose a reason to finish the cancellation process. You’ll also notice the total amount of refund that’s going back to the buyer.

5. Use the text box to write any message to your buyer. You can leave this empty if you like. Writing a message is optional.

6. Click or tap Cancel order to complete the whole process.

As you can tell, the whole process is straightforward, but that’s not all. Depending on the payment method, the refund process will be different. Let’s see how it works.

How Does the Etsy Order Refund Work?

Generally speaking, the refund process is also simple. However, it is different for different payment methods.

Etsy Payments

If you’re using Etsy Payments, the whole refund process is automated. Once you cancel the order, the funds with all the fees go back to the buyer automatically.

If you don’t have enough funds in your Etsy account, the platform will charge the card on file with the value due for a refund.

PayPal

If you’re offering PayPal as a payment method and your buyer has opted for it, the process is not automated. It’s your responsibility to refund your customer. Therefore, after you cancel the order, check the refund amount on your Etsy account and send it to your buyer.

Keep a critical fact in mind. You can’t cancel an order or issue a refund if it’s still processing. Usually, processing lasts for 24 up to 72 hours. Once it is complete, you can cancel the order and issue a refund.
